Mt. Baker Ski Area

Mount Baker sits about an hour and a half north-east and holds the world record for snowfall in a single season. It is a mountain with a reputation among skiers and snowboarders for deep, reliable snow rather than for resort polish. Chains are often required on the road up.

Whale Watching

Boats run out of Anacortes and the San Juans looking for orcas, humpbacks, minkes and greys, along with seals, porpoises and eagles on the way. The terminal is about half an hour west. Trips are weather-dependent and busiest in summer, so book ahead.
